- For a point guard, first of all you need to be physically fit and have good stamina. A point guard needs to run the team, and if they need to keep taking breaks and sitting down because they're tired, they just won't get playing time. Secondly, you need to be able to dribble the ball well with both hands. Also, the ability to either shoot very well or drive very well (preferably both), but definitely at least one of those qualities. The point guard also needs to be able to defend his position, that usually means staying in front of very quick players. Another very important skill is the ability to run the pick-and-roll, which is the basis for much of NBA offense. If a point guard can't run the pick-and-roll, they have no hope of making the NBA. The main job of the prototypical PG, is to facilitate the offense. This means that you have to distribute the ball, keep the ball moving. Take you own shots definitely, but your job is to keep everybody involved and share the ball around. Obviously, if there's a star on your team, you want to go through him/her, but a point guard can't be jacking up 3s every possession or putting your head down and driving each possession. The biggest skill that separates good from great point guards is intelligence. You need to be able to keep track of all the little things. Notice that a team-mate is getting hot, and keep feeding him the ball. Notice that your big-man is running the floor well and try to reward him by giving him the ball. Notice that the man your guarding has no left-handed dribble, and force him to use that hand. Hope this helps!
- go with deeeeetroit basketball
- Shooting skills, Quickness, Layups, and some cool tricks. :D
- 1. dribbling 2. shooting 3. passing to targets of some sort since passing is part of calling plays, which you can't practice unless you're with the rest of the team.
