What major skills should I have when creating a balanced character on Oblivion?
I want to create a balanced character that would be easy to use the first time playing the game on my 360. So what major skills should I use to make him as powerful as can be? And what race should I make him as well?

- There could be many Answers to your Question, as the term 'balanced character' is highly subjective. However, you should keep certain things in mind when creating a character in Oblivion. * Skill Ranking - This is perhaps the most important aspect of Oblivion. When you sleep and cause your character to gain a level, your enemies follow suit. This causes enemies to be a challenge no matter what your level is. However, they do not gain any skill ranks (aside from their normal level gains) when when you level up your skills. So, for example, a Level 1 character could potentially become Master Rank in Blade. This potentially allows low-level characters to surpass the skills of any enemy in the game. * Skill Point Gains - The classes you are able to choose from during the 'Tutorial' level are pretty balanced already. However, you can create a custom class for your character to 'fix' any of the shortcomings of these classes. When creating a custom class, be sure to select major skills that do not level too quickly. The reasoning is simple: for every ten total levels gained in your major skills, your character gains a level (though your character will need to sleep first). If these levels were raised due to one or two fast-gaining major skills (like Alchemy, Athletics or Acrobatics), your character may become unbalanced. Each skill level gain gives bonuses to certain Attributes when your character gains a level. For example, most spells give bonuses to Intelligence and Willpower. Try to choose major skills that will level up pretty evenly. * Comfort Level - While a balanced character may help a bit in the game, your comfort playing him or her (as well as your level of enjoyment) is most important. If your playing style is a stealthy rogue, then choose a Stealth class or create your own. Ask yourself, "Will I have fun playing this character?" Race and gender are also up to preference. Certain genders do better with certain classes, but these bonuses are small, overall. Go with what gender you would prefer to play with. Each race has their own special abilities and bonuses. You may want to choose a race that meshes well with the class you want your character to be. For example, choosing a High Elf for a Magicka class. When it comes down to it, though, no race, gender, birth sign or class is 'wrong'. Some may be more challenging than others (like a High Elf under the Apprentice birth sign). Go with what fits for you. Also, keep in mind that you will be looking at your character's mug for quite a few hours. Choose a race/gender that you won't get sick of looking at. In my source are the official forums for Oblivion. You will find a lot of useful advice on character creation. Enjoy and Have Fun!

- The important thing is what you would like to be mostly. For e.g I want to be a warrior or imperial and fight mostly. But even though I started out as such, I ended up better as a theif and a murderer (dark brotherhood). That is because, the initial character you select, gives you more skills for that character to start with. But if you get diverted in the game and join thiefs and murderers, and do better at it, your skills will increase and you will get really diverted from who you really are. A warrior can become a thief. An imperial can become a murderer. I like fighting initially (so I chose more fighting skills with some imperial personality (knight) , = warrior, imperial) etc. But belive, me this game is so long (100's of hours), you'll get tired of fighting each and every monster and person you encounter. So later on on the game, I use my sneak skills to just sneak past enemies and get my quest done , rather than fighting. Much much easier. For that you've to become member of the dark brotherhood and thiefs guild. If you decide only to sneak and attack, you might not be successful in making money as a gladiator (in the arena). But if you don't like traditional weapon fighting but wanted to use magic instead, then choose to become a mage or something similar initially. But remember sneak skills always help. They'r ethe best, you can sneak past enemies and don't have to fight, you can steal as much as you want, kill people easily (sneak attack gives 6x damage). But if you like fighting , then start initially always fighting and when you blade skills reach higher than 70 , then you can start sneaking. So if you really need to fight you'll be good at it. I'm not any good at magic, but I've killed even the best mages, the best gladiators just with my weapon skills easily. If it gets difficult with just traditional weapon fight , then join the mages guild and steal or get enchanged weapons, so you can kill easily.
