Will Alert, Nunavut ever become a Las Vegas-like entertainment boom city?

1. Probably not. At least not until after the ice-caps melt and then it may be under water and humans would be extinct.
2. I don't think so. And the people of Nunavut certainly hope not.
3. No, it's cold! There are no major cities there. Someone might do something to put Nunavut on the map. But anything's possible
4. Fifty years ago, a small mining community that had origins as a Mormon community fort suddenly became a happening place for gamblers and tourists. They flocked to the desert oasis known as Las Vegas because someone had a great idea to buy up inexpensive land that no one wanted and make it into a resort and mecca for sin and vices. Could this ever happen in a place called Alert, Nunavut? Anything is possible. You just need a few people with a vision and the investment capital to make it happen. Of course, it would have to be something unique. Gambling getaways have been done. If it's not Las Vegas it is Atlantic City, so both coasts are covered. And I don't see really cheap flight and hotel deals for a place like Nunavut, because it is off the airline routes, and it costs so much to get materials and resources up to that part of the world. More likely, what could happen is with all the natural resources (diamonds, gold, oil, etc) that Canadian researchers are discovering up there, the Canadian navy will have to establish a larger presence. Alert may be a little too far north for that, but a community like Hall Beach or even Kugaaruk may be a good spot to establish a military and scientific research base. That would mean an influx of money from sailors or ship crews. Perhaps a quirky idea to set up some big adventure could attract more people. For example, a hotel that is built partially BENEATH the permanent ice pack, with rooms looking out on the icy ocean floor or sea creatures. Rooms would have warnings like "In the event of a water leak, immediately notify hotel staff and evacuate the floor." lol
