  1. be able to type
  2. Most require proficiency is MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and others depending on the specific employer, as well as basic knowledge of how to navigate the internet and use basic Windows programs. They may also want you to be skilled in Quickbooks or similar software.
  3. I was laid off from a front office administrative assistant position held for 4 years at an A/C contractor earlier this year. There is more than just computer skills to front office jobs. You need to be highly organized, detail oriented, able to handle multi-line phone systems (not easy if you have a bad memory), efficient and effective at multi-tasking, team player, willingness and ability to learn and fully cover someone else's position in addition to your own, and the list goes on... Computers - the minimums Intermediate level Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook AND be able to work with versions 2000, 2003, and 2007 (never know which one the employer is using). Photoshop CS3 or CS4 (noticed MANY employers requiring it) AutoCAD (engineering firms only...some require it, most don't) Quickbooks (some require it, most are "plus if you have it") Typing speed... 58 wpm is good BUT what is the accuracy level? To an employer the accuracy is just as important as the speed. If a hiring manager is faced with 2 candidates..."A" who types an average 58 wpm w/ 60% accuracy and "B" who types an average 45wpm w/ 98% accuracy. Guess which one the employer will pick? If you guessed "A", you're wrong. The employer will pick "B". Why? Because "B" is paying more attention to the task at hand which translates to an employee who is more productive because less time is wasted making corrections.
